  After corresponding with the staff at John De La Howe back and forth, off and on for about two or three years, I finally went all the way with it and had my son placed there. The staff knew exactly what type of child they were accepting into their establishment because they have copies of his school records and they’ve also been informed about his run ins with the law. I was under the impression that they had disciplinary actions and plans in place for when the children misbehave but to my surprise, THAT IS NOT THE CASE! After only two weeks, I was called to pick my child up due to a VERBAL altercation that took place between him and another student. I live two hours away which means I’m on the road a total of four hours there and back. What a huge inconvenience because that’s why I took my child there, because of his behavioral issues. Aren’t they aware that the type of children who are placed there will argue and struggle building relationships sometimes. After all, isn’t that why most parents who inquire about their program are even looking into it in the first place? Absolutely! So why was my son sent home after only two weeks of him being there. They say that children are suppose to grow there but how when the parents have to come pick them up for the first thing they do? We wouldn’t place our kids there had there not been issues at home or school prior to coming. Also they have started sending these problem children off to McCormick High School instead of the school on JDLH campus in which is pointless as well because again, most parents seek help from JDLH because of issues at public school and are trying to remove their children from that environment to something different. However, once they get to McCormick High School, they’re sent back to campus for the least little thing and are expected to act like model students when they are clearly children who struggle in more ways than one. From behavior to mental challenges. After two weeks, my child has already been suspended from there. I don’t see where the JDLH staff has tried to advocate at all on my sons behalf. Just giving me one bad report after the next without helping him work on his behavior or strategizing a plan for him. Excuse me for thinking that that’s their job. If it isn’t then I would like to know exactly what JDLH is in business for. My child isn’t homeless. I didn’t send him there for shelter. I sent him there for discipline, structure and a more therapeutic environment to help him grow as a person but none of that has manifested. The program is nothing like what I expected and to me it seems as if they’ll deal with your child as long as everything is perfect with them but once they start displaying ways that got them there in the first place...they want to remove them from the campus in which is unfair to the student and the parents. It’s a huge let down if you ask me. I’ve made the decision to end my relationship with JDLH because they’ve done nothing for my son and I but run me up and down the road for no reason.
